A Mediator,  Not an Intermediary


What is the difference between a mediator and an intermediary?  Much, every way.  An intermediary is one with whom one has relationship or communication instead of another, who is the one with whom one wants to communicate or have a relationship but turns instead to the intermediary for some reason.  A mediator is not an intermediary at all.  A mediator of a communication or relationship does not come into the communication or relationship at all except in the most temporary and insubstantial of manners only for the purpose of facilitating the communication or relationship that is already there between two parties. The facilitation of a mediator is a special kind of facilitation, however, because it is a facilitation in a case where there is some need for reconciliation between the parties which inhibits their communication or relationship.  The mediator can then seem to be an intermediary, though not an intermediary, because the success of a communication or relationship may depend on the mediator's successful communication with both parties.  However, it is the nature of an intermediary simply to relay a communication.  In doing this the intermediary becomes an aspect of the message.  Thus any relationship that was there between two parties now includes the intermediary and becomes a relationship between three parties.  A mediator is not someone who relays a message between someone and someone else but rather who brings new perspective or new information into a communication by helping each party, from outside the relationship, to understand the other party better or express themselves to the other party better.  Thus, when the mediator's work is done it is as if they were never there.  They are not a third party in the relationship.  The mediator does not in any way come between the one person and the other person.

Are these not good in a non-relative paradigm?

Could someone not even say that democracy is an instance of godliness and that these factors of modern technology, in that they secure democracy at fundamental levels are therefore also expressions of godliness?

In response to this it needs to be understood that as a form of method it is the design of technique to become closed, to not remain open to alteration and alternative forms or transformations.  It is evident that to begin with techniques begin by being open in character and only become closed as they develop and are refined and perfected.

To use the automobiles and roads as an example...  

To begin with an automobile gives a person the equivelant of superpowers.

Ultimately the technology of automobiles and roads has been refined according to its own logical imperative until roads have become paved, until most people have cars or access to mass transit and until almost all communities are built around the technical logic of automobiles.  Other potentials for the building of community are moved further out of reach.

To use the internet as an example...

To begin with we are seeing a great increase in the democratization of information and communication through the internet.

Ultimately, other non technological forms of interpersonal balance and learning will be moved further out of reach as the internet reaches the same level of maturity that the automobile has reached in civilization.

Good can decieve far more than evil when it comes to the question of methods.  Evil means, like evil ends are easily recognized as being wrong.  Means that are wrong means but are good means are not so easily recognized.

Techniques, closed methods, are chosen for many reasons over open methods.  One of the primary reasons is that techniques can be turned easily into templates and then multiplied exponentially and universally.  It is self-evident, however, to living organisms, through their varied learning experiences, that not all means fit all times and situations.  What happens when a there is such an investment in a given technique that because it has been universally applied as a template it is too costly to change it when it no longer is the best method suited to a situation?  What happens is that people start to think about changing the conditions of the situation to fit the technique that they have invested in to make it work.  This is the principle of technological empirialism.  We have been living in a civilization of technological imperialism for some time now.  
The printing press brought us to a set of techniques and then technologies that resulted in the transformation of the nature of community and the transformation of the nature of learning itself.  We found we could live with the level of technological imperialism that resulted from the invention of the printing press.  Now we have the internet.  It is naïve to think that the democratization of information will be the end result.

Different Learning Styles (LS) produce and seek different Dialogue Styles (DS).

1. Consider the analogy of Direct and Indirect Interpersonal Communication Styles (ICS).  Someone who communicates with a direct style may interpret many messages as being direct which are actually meant to be indirect. Such errors in processing can lead to the conclusion that the speaker is being coy, vague or obscure on purpose.  

If it is the other way around and a direct message is expected to be and misunderstood to be indirect it can seem that the speaker is being deliberately aggressive or offensive.   ICS, interpersonal communication styles, like directness or indirectness, can be an expression of learning styles but are not learning styles themselves.  They can, however, serve as clear illustrations for how personal styles can contribute to misunderstandings.  

Using the possible processes of misunderstanding referred to above, by way of analogy we can see how a sequentially oriented learning style can lead to misunderstanding a globally structured communication due to automatic attempts to recognize it as sequentially structured.  For example, what is expressed as an essential node of thought by someone using an organic learning style could be mistaken as an intended starting point for someone using a linear learning style.

Inversely, what might be expressed as merely an alternative to be considered for reference but dismissed as a logical learning step by someone using a sequential learning style might be mistaken as a branch of thought that needs elucidation by someone using an organic learning style.

2. Different learning styles create a different interest in the particulars of a subject or situation and the organic aspects or relationships of things in a subject or situation.  Depending on the strength of their interest in particulars or organic aspects people will want and expect different protocols when engaging in dialogue. Protocols to do with control over who has the floor, who should speak and when, the way in which interruptions can be tolerated, etc., can come into play.  Very different expectations about respect for others can arise where a process focuses on particulars and where a process focuses on global learning.  

The needs and interests of the learning process involved with different learning styles can go very deep.  But even at the surface level of conversational protocol operating with different rules of engagement can lead to process control conflict, misunderstandings and even "wars".

Conclusion:  When people enter into dialogue they do so with their own learning style interests.  If they are unaware of this and unable to unable to learn about and negotiate one another's learning style interests they may end up trying to communicate at cross purposes.  It would not be about having different opinions or points of view or anything like that.  It would not be about having different goals or objectives.  It would simply be about having different learning style needs and interests that they were unaware of and unable to facilitate for themselves and for one another.

There are some slides under the heading [[The Story of Learning |http://www.slideshare.net/drichards/the-story-of-learning]] here.  Those slides give an idea of what people today might be likely to think of when they read this heading.  It suggests to most people something like "The Story of Education" only with an emphasis on the learner's side of things in education today.  Most often this learner we are talking about is going to be a child. This is so even though times are changing and the idea of adult learning and life-long learning is now becoming common place.  The story I will tell as the story of learning is something else than the story of education, even from the learners side, whether we are talking about children or adults.

The story of learning that I will tell is the story of experiential learning.  The term Experiential Learning is sometimes used as the name of a category of formal learning, a type of workshop learning where people are guided in doing action exercises instead of the intellectual exercises of academic learning.  That is not the experiential learning that I am talking about.  The experiential learning that I am referring to is the  constant learning, the never-ceasing leaning that we do all of our lives.  If we are alive we are learning.  This is the experiential learning I am talking about, and the story of this learning is the story that I am going to tell.
